Contrary to what you might think, gladiators were vegetarians and their diet consisted mainly of beans and grains. They were referred to as hordearii--which literally translates to "barley men." A barley carbo-load helped their bodies be better designed for survival in the arena.

We wish we could go back in time to upgrade their pre-combat meals with what we believe is the greatest energy elixir of all: chocolate. But since we’re still working on that whole time travel thing, we attempted to harness their courage with this bar combining their superfood and our favourite milk chocolate.

The Gladiators chapter perfectly balances robust cacao bean notes and milky undertones. Using cacao beans sourced from Venezuela and Ecuador, we've created our artisanal version of dark milk chocolate. It has 60% cacao content.

Combining two of our favourite elements, dark chocolate's rich cocoa taste and milk chocolate’s creamy texture, they come together for an unforgettable chocolate experience.

Chocolate often gets a bad rap because of its sugar content. It's unfortunate since cocoa can be highly beneficial to your health. At Eat It Like, we firmly believe that cocoa offers many benefits and that the quality of cocoa beans is crucial. For this reason, all our chocolate bars are made with higher cocoa and lower sugar content.

Our Gladiators chapter contains 60% cocoa and is low in sugar. So rather than filling yourself up with empty calories, you'll get the goodness of cocoa instead, sparing you from crash-inducing sugar rushes.

Our Gladiators chapter is a dark, rich yet creamy and smooth treat. Grass-fed milk powder imparts a rich caramel taste to it.

The star, the winning ingredient, the basis of this bar is popped barley. Barley was considered a powerful food by the Romans, who believed it would strengthen the body of a gladiator. As previously mentioned, this food was a large part of the arena fighters’ diet, along with wheat and beans - a truly plant based fighter’s diet.

Get a taste of gladiator life without having to don gladiator sandals, tour the Coliseum or go to a barley farm with our Gladiators chapter. Savour dark milk chocolate with barley and enjoy a treat worthy of a gladiator.

Is your Gladiator's chocolate bar organic?

Yes! Eat It Like is a chocolatier committed to using only organic, high-quality ingredients to create our chocolate bars. For the Gladiators chapter, only five elements are used: cacao beans, cane sugar, pure cacao butter, grass-fed milk powder and popped barley.

Are your chocolate bars refrigerator-safe?

The chocolate can be kept in the refrigerator. Removing it from the fridge at least 10 to 15 minutes before eating is best. Once opened, ensure the chocolate bar is protected in plastic or stored in a container to prevent it from absorbing odours.

The chocolate should not be frozen, as sudden temperature changes will degrade its quality and result in a fat bloom.

What is dark milk chocolate?

Dark milk chocolate provides all the antioxidant benefits while providing a melt-in-your-mouth experience. This type of bar generally refers to one that contains a higher percentage of cacao, usually between 40% and 60%, and also contains milk.

What does 60% on the Gladiators chapter indicate?

Additionally, you can use the ratio to compare sweetness versus chocolate taste intensity. The 60% refers to the cacao percentage in our Gladiator chocolate bars. A higher rate indicates chocolate that’s less sweet and more intense.
